Gavin, when I next saw him at luncheon, seemed to have quite regained his usual breezy manner.
âIâm so glad youâre here, Uncle Gavin,â Antoinette greeted him. âI was very afraid yesterday that Papa had upset you.â
âOh, heâs always upsetting me, you know that,â Gavin said ruefully. âBut it would take more than a few harsh words to get rid of me!â
âI certainly hope so! I want you to have a look at Perdita for me. I thought she seemed a little lame, but Thompson insists there is nothing wrong with her.â
âOf course Iâll look at her for you, sweeting.â
âAnd perhaps ride with me if there really is nothing the matter with her?â
Gavin raised an eyebrow. âFaith, I am honoured! Itâs not often you ask your old uncle to ride with you.â
She dimpled at him. âOh, youâre not old! Youâre much younger than Papa.â
âA couple of years only.â
âWell you seem much younger. And much more fun! And if you donât ride with me, I wonât be able to go. Papa has forbidden me to go out alone.â
âAh! Now I see it all. Itâs not like you to obey your father so readily, though.â
Antoinette gave me a sly look. âI have to answer to Flora while Papa is away. And she is very strict, arenât you, Flora?â
I shook my head, smiling, and refusing to be drawn.
âDo you ride, Flora?â Gavin asked.
âIâm afraid not,â I admitted. âAnywhere I needed to go, I went by trap. And riding can be expensive as well as time-consuming. Neither money nor time were plentiful at Tuckerâs Grave.â
âIn that case, I think you should learn!â Gavin said. âWhy, Iâd be happy to teach you myself.â
âOh, I donât think so.â I couldnât help but wonder what Louis would say if he came home to find me trotting about the countryside on a horse belonging to him, and with his much-disliked brother for company.
âWell, you have only to say the word,â Gavin told me. Then his face became serious. âIf you could ride you could go back to visit your friends and even spend an hour or two in your old home, and no one the wiser,â he said. âYou must miss it all a great deal.â
âI do,â I agreed wistfully. âBut even if I could ride, I wouldnât be able to get into the inn. Louis has had it all boarded up.â
âBut you must have a key.â
âNo. There was only the one, and Louis has that. He is the rightful owner now, remember.â
Antoinette was becoming bored with this conversation. âUncle Gavin, can we ride this afternoon?â she begged. âWhen youâve checked out Perdita for me?â
He laughed. âDonât you think I have any work to do?â
âNo,â she said without hesitation. âThatâs Papaâs domain. You⦠Iâve never known you to choose work over pleasure. In fact, I donât think you do any work at all!â
Gavinâs eyes flickered over my face and for a brief moment I saw an almost uncanny reflection of that look I had seen when I surprised him in the study.
